If you would have asked me as a teenager who "scri

If you would have asked me as a teenager who "scriptorians" were, I probably would have said something like:

An older man
A religion professor at BYU
Someone with advanced degrees
Someone who has a huge library

That was my impression. My view was that scriptorians were few in number and had unique skill sets. In addition, I generally thought that women were not scriptorians - not because they were not smart enough to become one, but because that was not the message I was receiving. I was more likely to hear, "my husband is the one who knows the scriptures in our home;' and that sent the message to me that this was not an expectation to have in myself.

Then I read this quote from President Kimball and it was like a lightning bolt hit me. This message held immense power and it changed my life.

"I stress again the deep need each woman has to study the scriptures. We want our homes to be blessed with sister scriptorians-whether you are single or married, young or old, widowed or living in a family.

"Regardless of your particular circumstances, as you become more and more familiar with the truths of the scriptures, you will be more and more effective in keeping the second great commandment, to love your neighbor as yourself. Become scholars of the scriptures-not to put others down, but to lift them up! After all, who has any greater need to "treasure up" the truths of the gospel (on which they may call in their moments of need) than do women and mothers who do so much nurturing and teaching?"

Last week something remarkable happened - I had a completely empty house for the first time in months!

I love the relaxed days of summer, but I have to admit I welcome the routine and fresh start of school starting again. One of the things that gets a kick start at this time of year is our Come, Follow Me routine.

If you’re in the same boat, here are three things that might help:

‣ Start with a family council. Get buy-in from everyone at the beginning by explaining how important family scripture study is and some of the blessings that can come. Talk through the best time of day to come together and how you want it to work.

‣ Plan the week on Sunday. Spend a few minutes each Sunday planning what and how you will teach this week. Not every night needs to be the same, maybe once a week you will take a topic from the FSY booklet, or work on a spiritual goal together.

‣ Be flexible and expect bumps in the road. Some nights will be busy (or filled with that dreaded Math homework) and some won’t go as planned. Have some easy lessons ready to go, like the illustrated stories, one of the Book of Mormon videos, or an episode of Drawn In.
